Museum
of Emigration
|
Teguise,
ancient capital of the island, has proudly conserved
this beautiful 16th Century castle which was constructed
by Sancho de Herrera. Its walls of extraordinary
thickness and sturdy square towers protect the castle
that overlooks the Villa de Teguise.
The 17th Century saw a major expansion
designed by Leonardo Torriani, the architect who
strengthened its fortifications, since the history
of Santa Barbara was marked by successive invasions
by pirates and corsairs. In 1991, the old fort was
converted into an emotionally moving museum which
deals in detail with the Canary emigration to the
Americas. This exemplary ethnographic collection
is well worth a visit, and may be the first museum
of its kind.
